The President’s executive order aimed at increasing transparency about wages and preventing retaliation against those who discuss their wages is not new. It reinforces longstanding decisions of the National Labor Relations Board that protect employees’ Section 7 rights to discuss their wages without fear of retaliation. Most employers – whether federal contractors or not – are covered by the National Labor Relations Act. Tomorrow’s executive order highlights the law of the land and gives employees additional protection.

Esta Bigler, director of the Labor and Employment Law Program at Cornell University’s ILR School, argues that federal law already protects employees’ rights to talk about their pay – but Obama’s order should strengthen those rights. (via cornelluniversity)
